Developer proposes a ‘more-nuanced approach’ to foreign investment in B.C. housing

How do we balance inviting necessary investment, protecting affordability, and ensuring homes stay occupied?

With B.C.’s housing crisis and construction capital shortages amid increasing conversations about foreign-investment policy, our CEO Rick Ilich shared his perspective with The Vancouver Sun:

“If we’re inviting foreign money back into the market, I would recommend that it comes with a bit of a handcuff, and that would be a requirement to enter the rental pool for five years.”

This nuanced approach would allow foreign buyers under regulated conditions—requiring units be rented through professionally managed programs for five years after completion.

The result: increased rental supply, enhanced development capital, and guaranteed occupancy addressing multiple housing challenges.
